What is baptism?

Baptism is a celebration of God’s grace and the new life God gives us in Jesus.
Throughout the New Testament, people who put their faith in Jesus responded by being baptized. Jesus Himself was baptized, and He invited His followers to baptize others in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

At Advent Hope, we practice baptism by immersion—being lowered beneath the water and raised again—as a symbol of Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection. Going beneath the water represents dying to our old life with Christ. Rising from the water points to the new life God gives us in Christ.

Before baptism, we’ll spend time together exploring the foundations of Christian faith and what it means to follow Jesus as part of a community of faith. There is room for questions. Our goal isn’t to rush you through a process, but to help you make a thoughtful and personal decision.

03 — Celebrate your baptism

When you’re ready, we’ll plan your baptism during one of our Sabbath worship gatherings.

Baptism is both deeply personal and beautifully communal. Your church family gets to witness your decision, welcome you, pray for you, and celebrate the new life you have in Christ.

How do I know if I’m ready to be baptized?

You don’t have to have everything figured out. Baptism is a response to the good news of what God has done for us in Jesus. It’s saying, “I trust in Christ and the grace God has given me through Him, and I want to live in the new life He offers.” You’ll still have questions and room to grow. Following Jesus is not about having arrived; it’s about continuing to live and grow in His grace.

Do I have to have my whole life together before I’m baptized?

Not at all! None of us has it all together. Baptism isn’t about saying, “I’m perfect now.” It’s saying, “I embrace God’s sufficient grace in Christ and the new life He gives me.” Jesus accepts you just as you are, and by His grace, you can keep growing into the person He created you to be.

Do I have to become a member of the church when I’m baptized?

Baptism welcomes us into the worldwide community of Jesus, and following Jesus is meant to be lived out in a local church community. At Advent Hope, baptism normally includes becoming a member of the church. Membership is simply a way of saying, “This is the community where I want to belong, grow, worship, serve, and follow Jesus with others.”

What does it mean to belong to the community of Jesus?

We were created for community. Being part of the community of Jesus means you don’t have to explore your faith or follow Jesus alone. You have people to pray with, worship with, learn with, and serve alongside. You have people to walk through life with—people who can support you, just as you support them. We grow better together.

What if I’ve been baptized before?

If you’ve already been baptized by immersion as a follower of Jesus, you may not need to be baptized again. In the Adventist Church, rebaptism can be a meaningful choice when someone has experienced a significant renewal of faith, is returning to Jesus after having walked away, or has come to a new understanding of their faith and wants to publicly reaffirm their commitment. But rebaptism is a personal decision—it should never be pressured or treated as something everyone needs to do. We’d be glad to talk with you about your experience and help you discern what makes sense for you.
